April IS the cruelest month From: listmaster (view other messages by this author) Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 15:03:56 --------------------------------------------- I hate April and it hates me. Translation by SYSTRAN: And the first day of April was not favourable with the nice writing, him either. You remember it? It was the day when a bad car in the carpark here sounded its alarm of horn almost every 5 minutes of the day (except for the 5 minutes when I went myself to the carpark to find the vehicle guilty to note his numèro license on his plates of conducting apprentice! Then the car in question was quiet like the tomb!) Therefore it is necessary that I make qqc of good for my readers this morning before a new blow of destiny still erases my good intentions in this respect while me returning faché. Because I find unlucky person this April thanks to the kind of history about which I speak above. (It may be that T.S. Eliot was right, is not this: " April is the cruelest month. ") Site |

April is master of disasters In air, on land or sea, no one is safe.
By COLLEEN CASON
Even the prostrate poet may not have been aware of how vast and violent that wasteland might be.
Other months have their blemishes on the Day Planner of time, but April is history's hulking carbuncle.
As if to prove it is a five-letter word for bad news, all the following happened in April.
Jesus was crucified in 30 A.D. Assassins cut down Abraham Lincoln in 1865, Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 and Richard the Lionhearted in 1199.
Strife is rife. The United States declared war on Germany in 1917 and on Spain in 1898. Bataan fell to the Japanese in 1942, and the Bay of Pigs invasion was crushed by Castro's forces in 1961. The Irish rebellion began in 1916. L.A. was rocked by riots in 1992. In Waco, Texas, the Branch Davidians perished in a fiery siege the next year.
Terrorists come out of the woodwork. In 1954 at the U.S. Capitol, five congressman were gunned down on the floor of the House by Puerto Rican radicals. The sailors of the HMS Bounty mutinied in 1789. Hijackers of a Kuwait airliner threw murdered hostages to the tarmac at the Cypress airport in 1978.
April is naturally disastrous. Noah ark's ran aground on Mount Ararat in 2348 B.C. and just last year, the upper Midwest was swamped by the worst floods in U.S. history.
Our nation's worst earthquake shook San Francisco in 1906. Through the eons, Mounts Etna, Vesuvius and Santa Maria in Guatemala all erupted in April. In 1947, tornadoes cut across Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, killing 169.
Fortunately, no one was hurt when the highest gust of wind -- 231 mph -- was recorded at Mount Washington, N.H., in 1934.
The month is a trial by fire. The world's worst nuclear disaster, the explosion of the Chernobyl reactor in the Soviet Union, happened in 1986.
The worst industrial accident in U.S. history occurred in 1947 in Texas City, Texas, when a freighter exploded in Galveston Bay, killing 600 of the town's 16,000 residents.
A fire gutted most of Pittsburgh in 1845. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright would later say the rebuilding was the bigger disaster.
It has not been a merry time on the maritime. The largest ship ever built, the Titanic, sank with 1,500 of its passengers in 1912. The nuclear submarine Thresher went down in April 1963, killing 129. Lesser known ships with names like Sea Bird, Asian, Daniel Steinman and Dara sank to the briny deep.
April is not a good month to tempt fate. Apollo 13, launched at 1313 hours in military-speak on April 11, 1970, radioed Houston with its "problem" on April 13.
Lest we forget. In 1792, the guillotine was sharpened for its first execution. Coffee rationing went into effect during World War II. Grunge musician Kurt Cobain killed himself in 1994. And, of course, income-tax returns are due on the 15th.
It's no wonder the universal call for aid is "May Day."
Colleen Cason writes for the Ventura County Star in California.
